Dŵr Cymru (Welsh Water) Wastewater Treatment Works
Cilfynydd, Wales, March 2012
Overview
In early 2012 Southern Solar won Dŵr Cymru’s tender for the installation of a large ground mounted system at their site in Cilfynydd with two weeks to install from the date of order to the deadline for completion.
The system was designed to maximise the potential of the site for PV, so that Dŵr Cymru could benefit from the Feed-In Tariff scheme. As a high energy user it was important to be able to reduce energy bills and improve their renewable energy targets.
The system was developed at one of Dŵr Cymru’s working waste water treatment plants, which presented multiple installation problems. One problem was the dated electrics on site, which Southern Solar’s electricians updated and connected to.
Our Solution
This project was Southern Solar’s first large scale ground mounted system, and used a ground-screw method provided by our subcontractor JPCS. JPCS is a leading provider of renewable energy services in the UK, being the largest and most experienced UK based installer of domestic, commercial and industrial PV ground mounting systems. Prior to working with Southern Solar they underwent our Subcontractor vetting procedure to ensure they were capable and reliable to complete the work. JPCS also supplied Southern Solar and Dŵr Cymru with their method statement and risk assessments.
Facts
System: 140kWp
Yield: 120,203kWh
CO2 Savings: 65,102kg/year

The installation process required excellent communication between all parties and mass coordination to bring together the project to tight deadlines. The system involved 594 panels, all to be specially mounted and electrically wired. The main influencing factor on the project was the strict time frame, which meant extra effort was put into all areas, with teams working overtime where necessary.
Once the installation was complete, connection to the grid had to be expertly timed around the weather and the working facility. Due to the nature of the site when it is raining it is vital that the pumps remain operational.
Therefore, our team had to manage the grid connection to strict guidelines at the appropriate time as agreed with all parties.
During the project there was also great uncertainty with the governments FiT’s being reviewed and a strict deadline set for the beginning of March to ensure a good return of the client’s investment. It was vital that our teams were able to ensure installation and connection to the grid before the deadline; this also meant assisting Dŵr Cymru in the ROO-FiT application that could only be submitted the day before the government’s changes.
Southern Solar also worked closely with Western Power Network Distributor in order to gain permission to connect the array at such short notice.
The project highlighted Southern Solar’s excellent project management, design and communication skills.
Southern Solar’s relationship with Dŵr Cymru continues, with additional work such as Tamper Proof fixings being installed at Cilfynydd to make the array more secure. We are also in discussion with them about other sites and O&M contracts.

Businesses like Dwr Cymru Welsh Water use a huge
amount of energy. So, solar energy systems are perfect
for generating some of this on site from renewables.
The cost of solar has come down so dramatically in the
last couple of years, which makes very good financial
sense. Electricity prices have gone up 9% per annum
for the last 10 years, by generating their of your own
energy DCWW are helping to fix some of their costs.
