Solar for your Home
What Should You Expect?
After contacting Southern Solar, our surveyors will size up your residential property and design a system to provide an optimised solution based on a variety of factors. If the quotation is accepted, the installation process will then begin. Our installation team are time-efficient and precise, providing you with a friendly and pleasant experience with a quick turn around.
“ In a year, we’ve generated around £1,400 from the FIT and we’re using less energy than the system generates as well. It’s better than you would get in any bank! ”
Mike Tracy in Somerset is just one of our many thousands of happy homeowners, thrilled with their solar investment. Here are a few key reasons why the sun should be shining on your house…
-
The price of installation has almost halved in the last 18 months, thanks to the lower price of panels and a greater availability of cheaper options;
-
Relief from rising energy bills;
-
A system costing £4,000-£8,000 will have paid for itself within 10 years and yield a 9.2% ROI over a 20 year guaranteed period;
-
Returns may even be better than predicted, because bills are rising faster in real life than the estimates your return is based on. So, to use the example above, real-world energy price hikes mean your ROI hops from 9.2% to 11.4%, with payback after 9 years;
-
The technology itself is better than ever – more efficient, easier to install and minimal maintenance.
There are two kinds of domestic solar technology:
Solar PV (PV for Photovoltaic) provides electricity from sunlight. This raw direct current (DC) is converted into alternating current (AC) to use in your home and any unused energy will run straight into the national grid. The Feed-in Tariff pays you a sum for everything you generate. You’ll be using the electricity you generate and therefore saving money on your bills. You’ll also be paid a small sum for the electricity that you are exporting to the grid, in addition to the FIT payments.
Solar Thermal heats your water for your taps and showers by transferring heat generated by panels on your roof to your hot water cylinder. You are entitled to a £300 grant on the cost of installation via the Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme. This can be claimed back once the system has been installed.
Suitability
Solar technology is ideal for any roof with a south facing aspect, especially if there is no shade from nearby trees or buildings. East and west facing roofs also work and we can work with partially shaded roofs. There are also energy efficiency requirements to take into account nowadays, so it is a little more difficult to set out in bullet points.
The best thing is to call your local office and speak to our staff there who will ask questions to determine your overall suitability and book a site survey if all sounds good.
Surveys take about an hour to an hour and a half. They are a no-pressure visit and are a chance for a technical salesperson to assess your roof, check your electrics and/or plumbing then explain your options so that you know what to expect from a completed solar system.
This visit will be swiftly followed by an itemised quote and an estimation of your likely payback, giving you the chance to consider whether solar is right for you.
